Hello, I’m SacChi, a blogger based in Kochi!
Today, I’m excited to introduce a true seasonal treasure in Kochi’s food scene—“Mejika Shin-ko” (young bullet tuna), available only for a short time at Taisho Market in Nakatosa Town.

🍽 What Is Mejika Shin-ko?
Every year from mid-August to mid-September (subject to catch conditions), Taisho Market in Kure, Nakatosa Town serves ultra-fresh Mejika Shin-ko.
“Mejika” is Kochi’s local name for marusouda bonito (bullet tuna). Only tuna less than one year old are called “Shin-ko,” and freshness is everything—this is a seasonal luxury offered right at the market just after being caught.
🔪 Expert Filleting & Citrus Ponzu Perfection
This time, I queued up at Wakohmaru’s stall inside Taisho Market.
Here, skilled chefs fillet the fish right in front of you—one fish per minute! The fresh slices are topped with fragrant peel from bushukan, Kochi’s beloved citrus.

The finishing touch is a special ponzu made with plenty of freshly squeezed bushukan juice.
🧡 One bite and you’ll be amazed at the tender, springy texture—totally different from regular katsuo (bonito)!
I look forward to this taste every year. (Even my dog waits eagerly for a treat of Shin-ko, by the way! 🐶)

🕒 Be Prepared to Line Up—Check the Latest Info
With growing popularity, visitors now come from across Japan, and lines often form in the morning.
💡 Tip: Check the “Shin-ko Arrival Report” on the official Nakatosa Town website after 8 AM to see the latest catches by fishing boat before heading out.
