[Summer Getaway] Refreshing Somen Noodles in a Cave at Yasumoridō — A Cool Culinary Experience in Nature

Real life&food in Kochi

Hello! I’m SacChi, a blogger based in Kochi, Japan.

This time, I took a refreshing summer side trip to a hidden gem in Ehime Prefecture—Yasumoridō Somen Nagashi, about a 2-hour scenic drive from Kochi City. Nestled at 360 meters above sea level , this summer-only attraction offers an unforgettable experience: slurping chilled somen noodles in ice-cold spring water flowing directly from a cave!

❄️ The Cool Delight of Somen Nagashi

Served in naturally chilled water straight from the cave, the somen noodles—made by the renowned “Kamogawa” brand from Okayama—are firm, silky, and satisfyingly smooth. The homemade dipping sauce is rich in shiitake umami with a hint of sweetness, complemented by fresh condiments such as wasabi, ginger, green onions, onion slices, and shiso leaves.

It’s fun scooping flowing noodles with a tea strainer, and the natural breeze of the forest makes it the perfect summer retreat.

📺 Featured on a local Ehime TV show, Yasumoridō saw a jump in visitors from 9,000 to 14,000 this year!

🎣 Rainbow Trout Fishing – A Family Favorite

Behind the somen area lies a limited-time rainbow trout pond:

  • Rod rental: ¥200
  • Fish caught: ¥400 each
  • Charcoal grilling: ¥100 per fish

You can have your freshly caught trout grilled on the spot and served on bamboo plates—a delightful countryside touch!

Note: I arrived on the final day of the season and witnessed the last rainbow trout being caught. We all cheered on the lucky fisherman!

🧭 Explore Yasumori Limestone Cave – Naturally Cool!

Next to the fishing area is Yasumori Shōnyūdō, a historical limestone cave where fossils of rare species (like a unique raccoon) were discovered in 1959. The interior stays cool and refreshing year-round. Don’t forget to borrow a helmet at the entrance, as some parts have low ceilings!
