🌿 Escape to Setogawa Valley – A Hidden Scenic Gem + Refreshing Strawberry Sweets at Berry Farm Yamamoto!

Real life&food in Kochi

Hello, I’m SacChi, your Kochi-based blogger!

With summer heat in full swing, it’s the perfect time to seek out cool, quiet spots away from the crowds. This time, I ventured to one of Kochi’s best-kept secrets—Setogawa Valley, a stunning natural hideaway that feels like your own private escape.

🚗 Located about 2 hours by car from Kochi City, we had the entire valley to ourselves—an incredibly serene and refreshing experience.

👀 Highlights of Setogawa Valley

🌊 1. Amegaeri Waterfall

The most iconic feature of the valley: a two-tiered waterfall with a 30-meter drop. The name “Amegaeri” comes from local fish (amago) that can’t climb the falls and must “turn back.” The emerald green plunge pool is breathtaking.

🌉 2. Burabura Suspension Bridge

Just as the name suggests—this bridge sways while you walk across! It’s a thrilling experience with panoramic views of lush greenery or autumn leaves.

💧 3. Jabuchi Waterfall

A smaller, tranquil waterfall near the entrance of the valley, located right after crossing the suspension bridge. Its deep green basin and peaceful ambiance make it worth a stop. The trail can be slippery—watch your step!

🟢 4. Hasshoubuchi Pool

A mystical emerald-colored pool located deep within the gorge. Simply stunning.

🌿 Along the way, you may also encounter wildflowers like Hemerocallis hakuunensis and campanula punctata blooming in the shade.

⚠️ Before You Visit Setogawa Valley – Things to Know

  • Narrow mountain roads (Prefectural Route 6): After turning off National Route 439, the forest path becomes very narrow with tight curves. Take extra caution if driving large vehicles or SUVs.
⇒ Use headlights and drive slowly around bends.
  • No shops or vending machines nearby: Stock up at convenience stores or roadside stations (e.g. Sunny Mart Cosmos Kamiyakawa) before you go. Don’t forget to bring water and salt tablets in summer to prevent heatstroke.
  • Slippery riverbanks & loose rocks: Wear sneakers or trekking shoes with good grip. Avoid sandals, heels, or thin-soled shoes.

Despite the rustic conditions, parking and restrooms are available. Prepare accordingly and enjoy this hidden natural paradise.

🍓 Berry Farm Yamamoto – A Playful Strawberry Café on Route 439

Located along Route 439 in Ino Town, Berry Farm Yamamoto is a cozy farm café offering refreshing, fruit-filled sweets made with local strawberries.

Set beneath the open sky, the café space serves:

  • Strawberry shaved ice
  • Strawberry milk shakes
  • Strawberry milk lattes

All are deliciously sweet and perfect for cooling off in the heat!

🎯 Bonus Fun – The “Shooting Game Challenge”!

For just ¥100 per try, visitors can test their aim in a classic “shateki” carnival-style game.
Hit 1 bingo out of 10 shots and you win a snack! Kids and adults alike will find themselves hooked.

I hit 8 out of 10 and scored 3 snacks—super lucky!
