🌸 Breathtaking Rainy Season Spots in Kochi: A Walk Through Rokujō Hachimangū Shrine and the Ajisai Road

Real life&food in Kochi

Although the rainy season ended rather quickly this year, I’d love to introduce two must-visit spots in Kochi that are especially beautiful in June—perfect for your trip next year!

🌼 Rokujō Hachimangū: Kochi’s Beloved “Hydrangea Shrine”

The first destination is Rokujō Hachimangū Shrine, located in Haruno Town, Kochi City. Affectionately known by locals as the “Ajisai Jinja” (Hydrangea Shrine), this peaceful site comes alive in early summer as colorful hydrangeas bloom across the grounds.

As you stroll through the shrine grounds, you’ll also be welcomed by familiar characters like Anpanman and his friends—beloved mascots born in Kochi Prefecture.

Follow the path of hydrangeas toward the main hall, and you’ll hear the gentle chime of furin (Japanese wind chimes) swaying in the breeze. The soft sound and vibrant flowers help ease the sticky summer humidity, creating a refreshingly serene atmosphere.

If you’d like to enjoy hydrangeas at home, you can also purchase locally cultivated hydrangea seedlings at the shrine—grown with care by the community.

🚶‍♀️ Ajisai Road: A 5km Hydrangea-Lined Walk Through Waterways

The second spot I recommend is Ajisai Road, located just 2 km from Rokujō Hachimangū. It’s a perfect place to stop by after your shrine visit.

Haruno Town is known for its intricate network of canals, and along these waterways stretches a 5-kilometer path lined with around 10,000 hydrangea bushes. It’s a truly impressive sight! If you take a closer look, you may even spot tiny creatures visiting the water’s edge—making the experience even more delightful.

On a personal note, the first time I tried to visit five years ago, Google Maps led me completely off course (oops!). Fortunately, the directions have since been corrected—so you can explore with confidence.
