🌿 Wanuke-sama: A Beloved Summer Ritual in Kochi, Japan

Real life&food in Kochi

I recently took part in a traditional Shinto ritual called Wanuke-sama (輪抜け様)—a symbolic and spiritual event that marks the beginning of summer in Kochi and other parts of Japan.

What Is Wanuke-sama?

Wanuke-sama is Kochi’s regional name for Nagoshi no Harae (夏越の祓), a mid-year purification ceremony held across Japan from late June to early July. The core of the ritual is walking through a large ring made of chigaya grass, known as a Chinowa (茅の輪). This act is believed to cleanse you of impurities accumulated over the past six months and to bring good health and protection for the rest of the year.

In Kochi and the wider Shikoku region, the ritual is most commonly observed on June 30th at local shrines.

Words of Blessing

Though the exact customs may vary by shrine, participants often recite the following sacred verse as they pass through the ring:

「水無月の夏越の祓する人は 千歳の命のぶというなり」
Minazuki no / Nagoshi no harae / Suru hito wa / Chitose no inochi / Nobu to iu nari

This roughly translates to:

“Those who perform the summer purification in June will enjoy a thousand years of life.”

Surprisingly, some of my Kochi friends weren’t familiar with the verse—but as always, it’s the spirit that counts!

How to Perform the Chinowa Purification (Three Loops)

Here’s a common sequence followed when walking through the Chinowa:

  1. Bow in front of the ring.
  2. Pass through the ring from the front and walk to the left (counterclockwise).
  3. Return and pass through again, this time to the right (clockwise).
  4. One final pass to the left (counterclockwise).
  5. Then proceed straight through to the shrine for your prayer or offering.

A Moment to Reset Mind and Body

Wanuke-sama is more than just a beautiful tradition—it’s a meaningful seasonal transition where we reflect, reset, and prepare for the months ahead with a cleansed spirit. It’s one of those uniquely Japanese summer rituals that make you feel truly in tune with nature and community.
